How is Time free to move outside its ascribed one dimension? How is it free to compress and expand back? It would have to have another or an adjacent dimension that it could move into. It just needs wiggle room.
I find it interesting, that 25 years ago, when I first wrote this paper, there was very little talk of multi-dimensional time in physics. Einstein’s space-time warping and the slowing down of time had been known for 80 years. Yet it was given little attention. I believe a large part of reasoning was:
a. new theories, like string theory, looked so hopeful;
b. the math was just not there; and
c. its just wacko to think about more than one dimension of Time!
As I worked to update this paper and the associated physics, this past two years, I am amazed at how much serious work I can now find on multi-dimensional time. 3D Time But 1st, let's begin with some definitions of Time.
[Excerpts from Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia: “Time” - Underlining & italicized markups are mine] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time
“The American Heritage Dictionary defines time as ‘a nonspatial linear continuum in which events occur in an apparently irreversible succession.’
“Encarta, Microsoft's Digital Multimedia Encyclopedia, gives the definition of time as ‘System of distinguishing events: a dimension that enables two identical events occurring at the same point in space to be distinguished, measured by the interval between the events.’ . . .
“From the age of Newton up until Einstein's profound reinterpretation of the physical concepts associated with time and space, time was considered to be ‘absolute’ and to flow ‘equably’ (to use the words of Newton – that is unvarying; steady) for all observers. The science of classical mechanics is based on this Newtonian idea of time. . . .
“Einstein showed that if time and space is measured using electromagnetic phenomena (like light bouncing between mirrors) then due to the constancy of the speed of light, time and space become mathematically entangled together in a certain way (called Minkowski space) which in turn results in Lorentz transformation and in entanglement of all (the) other important derivative physical quantities (like energy, momentum, mass, force, etc) in a certain 4-vectorial way (see special relativity for more details). 26
“A 4-vectorial way . . . “ Don’t freak-out – it’s just a way of describing space and time together, part of that entanglement thing. It is standard in geometry to graph a surface with ‘x & y’ coordinates for length and width. When you introduce height, you add a ‘z’ for the 3rd dimension. Adding time (t), adds a 4th dimension – four lines pointing in a given direction, 4 vectors, 4 coordinates (x, y, z & t).
Let’s extend this geometry, this set of coordinates, into our multi-dimensional time; remembering that time is not quite like space, with an up and down or a side to side. Time is better seen as a strong river with rapids, tidal pools and a distinct current. I believe you will come to see that it is time that allows for the other dimensions, not just more dimensions of space. It is time that gives shape to space; and a 2nd and 3rd dimension of time that gives full expression to our world and the cosmos.
Here are three (3) things to consider:
1) Before we turn time into that strong river, let’s just consider it a simple road or highway. Driving on my roadway I can only see and encounter what is just before me, at my coordinates – I have blinders on and can only ‘see’ one (1) dimensionally. A second (2nd) road at ‘right angles’ would not be in my line of sight and cars crossing mine would appear instantaneously. Same thing with a plane flying overhead; I would not be aware of the plane until it landed or crashed on “my road”. The little book Flatland (1884) gives a very good example of what “other dimensions” look like to people who live in narrow constrained dimensional worlds.
-- Point 1 – a 2nd or 3rd dimension of time is typically outside my field of vision and would appear to interact instantaneously or faster than the speed of light – hint gravity.
2) Now let’s turn time into that strong river (or a type of a Field/Membrane . . . but much more ‘fluid’). When the two ‘roads – now - rivers’ encounter themselves they create ‘turbulence’. As our 1st dimension of time moves thru the cosmos it encounters a 2nd dimension of time that creates a very slight drag (gravity & mass) and very specific degrees of turbulence (Quantum Theory and The Standard Model). What is also amazing is the ‘turbulence’ can more often be realized as resonant ‘strings’ (String Theory) and deep down – music!
-- Point 2 – Time interacts often as a field with a certain Event duration and horizon; and this occurs at the speed of light.
You mix the two points above together and I believe the only way you will experimentally realize them is a combination of The Plank Scale, Mandelbrot’s Fractals and the beauty of Symmetry. Turbulence will be a key just as it was for Leonardo da Vinci in his study of the heart valve closing.
3) Multi-dimensional time allows for objects and events to occupy the same space but at different time coordinates. Read that again, slowly - Multi-dimensional time allows for objects and events to occupy the same space . . . but at different time coordinates. Just to the right or left of us and just overhead is another dimension; in fact, two (2) other dimensions. Objects, events and Angels can occupy the 'same space' you are in - and often do.
Parallel Worlds? . . . I suppose, in a way but NOT a parallel universe with 'other' worlds and people. The Kingdom of Heaven contains the 'fullness of time' - all three (3) dimensions. We are the shadow people living thru a very serious 'dress rehearsal' for eternity. It serves no real purpose to have multiple four (4) dimensional worlds [three-space and only one-time dimension]. Three dimensions of space with three dimensions of time form The Kingdom of Heaven and the 6th dimension and three dimensions of space with two dimensions of time form mid-heaven, mass and gravity.
The significance of multi-dimensional time, apart from the 'physics', is Prayer and Authority. As a People, we are more 'wired' with each other than we ever realized. Love, Hope and Prayer can 'reach out and touch someone'.
I will close with a few pages from my little book (pages 72 - 75).
Down at this level of quantum foam space and time become intertwined, exchanging characteristics with each other. Some people call these twistors; some people call them spherical wave centers. It is one of the ways that mathematicians and physics can express, model and view space and time tumbling and turning.
One important characteristic of the tapestry of spacetime I would like you to consider is resonance. This is not a mathematical term or even very exact but it is another way for us to picture time and how it interacts with space; and I believe it will help us understand why music is so interwoven into the very fabric of spacetime. When I was in the Navy and worked with radio, radar and antenna systems, we talked about the ‘wave form’ that was created and ‘standing waves’.
The additional dimensions of time (a 2nd or 3rd dimension of time) create a more complex wave form and their harmonics and standing waves are also more complicated. (In physics they term this: The Superposition Principle. 27)
Music and musical instruments are the same; complex waveforms but with very specific notes and chords. It is also a combination of the music played and the voice or resonance of the instrument.
Resonance 28 is at that speed or vibration where everything either levels out or peaks. Sometimes you can have a smooth transition between the two and at other times you produce turbulence. A second dimension of time allows for multiple harmonics or waves within waves (and it can actually work with that ‘turbulence’ or chaos adding mass and gravity to objects). A 2nd dimension of time allows for waves to begin outside of our sphere of knowledge and echo or reverberate into our ‘world’. If they are not ‘part of our timeline’ we would not perceive them until they ‘cross our path’; very similar to the experiences of the people in the 2-dimensional world of Flatland. And, finally, time is closer to music than space for it has an aspect of quality.
A musical instrument, say a flute, will have openings along its length to create specific notes. A guitar will have strings of different sizes and frets to press against to also create different notes. Notes are specific like the granular packets of matter. Resonance is more fluid, and closer to the smooth transitions of gravity. Moving from the 4th dimension (of 3-space and 1-time) into the 5th dimension (of 3-space and 2-time) does not mean the 5th dimension smoothly and totally encompasses the 4th. There are specific ways 2-dimensional time interfaces with our 1-dimension of time. It is as often granular and limited as it is smooth and far ranging.
Resonance takes into account the very instrument itself, its makeup and ability to ‘express’ the music. The true tone and tembre of the instrument is created and fashioned with in its very make up. A toy guitar or child’s plastic flute can be mathematically perfect but the sound would be of very low quality. A Christian, who knows all the verses in the Bible but doesn’t know grace and compassion and has no ability to express Gods love, produces a harsh sound and has no Power.
To move from the natural into or through the supernatural and the spirit realm is as much dependent upon your character and faith as it is upon the situation and purpose at hand. Just because there is an additional dimension of time does not mean the possibilities are infinite. Just because legally you are a Christian does not mean you have power in the supernatural.
Multi-dimensional time and the supernatural are best viewed as a beautiful lattice structure. Its weave and tapestry winding through 3-dimensions of time but never filling it. Beautiful knots and long threads of possibilities suspending magnificent individual tapestries and songs. At times granular and specific; and at times smooth and flowing.
Were getting ready to move from the ‘physics’ and the physical to the ‘spiritual’ and the super-natural. I hope I have laid down enough of a ground work for you to see and realize that everything around you is as much vibrating energy as it is solid; that Earth and Heaven move near enough to each other to kiss, to intertwine and dance. There is a deep resonant song in the universe that Jesus sang eons ago. A song of salvation and hope; a song of faith and grace. A love song. And, alas, there are singers who sing other songs; and they would have you follow them. A highway wide and easy that only leads to sin and death.
How interesting that at the deepest probing of the atom we find music. I believe, like Leonard Bernstein, that Father God sang most of the creation story in Genesis. If I was truly ‘solid’, how could God be inside of me? Ah, but if I was really a song . . . . It makes so much sense to consider life as much a song as a story. I want to sing His song and when I do I feel Him sing with me. Songs and music interwoven into a beautiful tapestry of life. At times the threads are simple and pure; two or three different songs moving near to each other but separate. At other times the threads explode with color and texture; they tumble and turn, they intertwine and dance.
